The queen stage of the 2019 Itzulia didn’t disappoint. The beginning of the stage was frenetic and the candidates to go on the break struggled to attack. The first half an hour of racing was completed at an average speed of 44.5 km/h.
The attacks didn’t work and the rhythm of the race in the different climbs of the day reduced the peloton to 30 riders. De Marchi (CCC, 194) fought for the first mountain points of the stage to take the polka dot jersey. After a series of attacks a group of three riders was formed at the head of the race: Buchmann (BOH, 21), Henao (UAD, 102) and Madouas (GFC, 144). The trio didn’t collaborate and Buchmann attacked on the Trabakua climb to get up to 2 minutes of advantage over the other two riders.
Usartza wasn’t a problem for Buchmann (BOH, 21) who won in Arrate and became the new leader of the Itzulia 2019. Schachmann couldn’t follow the rhythm of his teammate and lost 1’04” seconds. He’s now 3rd on the overall classification.
Buchmann: “Our plan was to defend Schachmann’s jersey. We just had to follow the race course. I feel good with the result, I’m proud of my victory today. I think I can keep the jersey. We have a strong team and we’ve proved it. We’re going to give everything tomorrow, but we know it will be a fast race and that they will attack us. We’ll do everything to defend the jersey. It’s the most important victory of my career because it’s the first one at a World Tour level”.
