The third stage was the longest of the 2019 Itzulia: 191.4 km. The day started with many attacks ahead of the peloton, but it wasn’t until km 15 that the breakaway was formed by a group of riders that managed to go away at km 22: Bernard (TFS,172), Skujins (TFS,176), Sessler (BBH,224), Fernández (BBH,223), Rojas (MOV,5), King (TDD,131), Armirail (GFC,142) and Bravo (EUS,191).
The King of the Mountains, Bravo (EUS, 191), managed to increase his advantage and keep the polka-dot jersey.
The peloton controlled the race from the very beginning and didn’t let the break go more than 4’. The last 20 km were very fast. The teams tried to put their riders in the best position for a stage victory and to protect the ones riding for GC. Team Sky, Deceuninck, Bora-Hansgrohe were pulling ahead of the peloton to catch the breakaway that was finally neutralized with 5 km to go. The speed was high and a massive crash broke the pack. Alaphilippe, Kwiatkowski, Geraint Thomas, Castroviejo, Adam Hansen and Enric Mas were all involved.
Many riders attacking on the last kilometer tried to avoid a final massive sprint but the strongest was the overall leader Schachmann who won the third stage.
Schachmann:“I’ve felt very good during the last two days but I know I’m dealing with the best climbers of the World and it won’t be easy to defend this jersey. However, we have a strong team and we’re going to fight for it”.
